1. SMALL WORLD CONCERT "Boxing Day Sale"

Not really a Boxing Day sale, but this week is a great chance to get half-price tickets to March concerts by three excellent performers.

Until Dec. 31, Small World Music is offering 2-for-1 tickets to the following shows. According to SWM, the previous shows by all three sold out, so this is an opportunity you want to seriously consider.

NOTE: To take advantage of the sale, order (and pay for) one ticket if you want to receive two admissions for each show. (Or order 2 to get 4, etc.). The second admission will be listed as "guest" on your order.

March 4: Tinariwen

This will be the group's third Toronto show, and their 2009 CD, Imidiwan:Companions has often been called one of their best, and was on many "best of the year" lists.

Here's a 17-minute documentary on the group, their music, and rather extraordinary background.

March 25: Huun Huur Tu

It's been almost 5 years since this group of Tuvan throat singers played town -- at that time, they performed their unforgettable music in the intimate confines of the Lula Lounge. This time around, they'll be in the larger Mod Club

March 26: Habib Koité & Bamada

It'll be almost a year to the day since this excellent Malian guitarist/griot jammed the Revival.  For more about him, including numerous audio and video links, see this page from London's Sunfest

2. EVENT UPDATES:
See events page for details on these and other shows

  • Teddy Afro, the huge Ethiopian star, is beginning a North American and European tour in early 2010. As many know, he had been convicted and imprisoned for hit-and-run manslaughter: a charge many are convinced was politically motivated. The singer is a very vocal critic of the Ethiopian government. He was released in August of this year.

He'll play a show in Toronto at The Koolhaus on Jan. 23

  • Other 2010 events are now listed; besides all of the above, look for a return show by King Sunny Adé, plus Baaba Maal in his first Toronto appearance in 6 years,
