Hope you've been in training for the summer music season, because
this weekend will be a big test, with
three big festivals: Luminato (on
until June 14), Muhtadi International Drumming Festival plus the Art
of Jazz. Too much great stuff to list here. And mostly free too!
New event page:
The website now has a new,
occasional page with some more information and video about a few
shows and performers that may not be as widely known as they
should be. See
www.to-music.ca/events2note.htm.
Posted there now are notes
about Grupo Vocal Desandann, Buddy Milller (playing with Emmylou
Harris, Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin Friday at Massey Hall),
and three of the performers at Sunday's free Slide Guitar
Luminato concert: Sonny Landreth, the Campbell Brothers and
Debashish Bhattacharya. Also noted is Anacona: a 16-piece, all
women's orchestra from Cuba, founded in 1932, and playing Canada
for the first time this weekend at the Art of Jazz. (And joined
on Saturday by local Cuban All-Stars and Jane Bunnett).
Upcoming reminders:
- Tonight: Amadou & Mariam, plus
the launch of the Muhtahdi International Drumming Festival.
- Friday: Gladstone World
continues with "Eritrean Soul" from krar player Dawit Siyum;
reggae with Willi Williams at the Lula.
- Over the next 10 days: A
Bamboo reunion at the Lula, Richie Havens, Goran Bregovic and
his Wedding and Funeral Orchestra (two Luminato shows),
Brazliian Guitar Marathon (also a free Luminato event).
- Watch for Njacko Backo's CD
release, the African Film and Music Festival (June 19-21),
African Guitar Summit (June 30).
- Desandann, whom I've noted
several times are releasing their first CD in 10 years on
Friday, June 12 at Ellington's on St. Clair.
- Performers are now posted for
Afrofest (July 11-12), Harbourfront weekends (partial listings)
