Three brief notes today:

1. Happy Birthday Wanda!

The Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson is in town this weekend, and Saturday night will be celebrating her 70th birthday at the Cadillac Lounge. She can still rock, and still charm the room (which will no doubt be packed) with her down-to-earth graciousness. As always when she plays Toronto, she'll be backed by The Rizdales.

Wanda was one of kind when she first started performing. No other women rocked like she did sang like she did, or dressed like she did. You won't regret joining her for her birthday. Anyone who could write and belt out "Let's Have a Party" knows how to have one.

I never kissed a bear, I never kissed a goon
But I can shake a chicken in the middle of the room
Let's have a party, whoooo!!!

 -- “Let’s Have a Party”

Everyone always joins in on the "Whoooo!!"

You can read my review of her Oct. 2005 show here. I have photos of that show and her appearance last year. Both at the Cadillac Lounge.

2.  Lucky Dube killed

Sad news. If you haven't heard, South African reggae star, Lucky Dube was murdered on Oct. 18.

3.  Stella Chiweshe in town

The Queen of  Zimbabwean mbira is in Toronto until mid-December. Those who caught her concert at the Berkeley Church last July (or her 2 shows in Peterborough) experienced a real treat. One of the highlights of the year, for me.

She's available for workshops, as well as private bookings. You can contact her at 416 826-1252, or playmbira@gmail.com
